How often to change engine oil: intervals and signs

2026-10-08 · Prostor

What the manufacturer says

The oil change interval is given in the service book or owner's manual. For most modern cars it is 10–15 thousand kilometers or once a year, whichever comes first. Some engines need shorter intervals, so follow the documents for your exact model.

When to change it earlier

Shorter intervals are needed under severe use: frequent short trips, city traffic, cold winter starts, dusty roads, towing, aggressive driving. In such conditions oil loses its properties faster, so change it roughly twice as often as in ideal conditions.

Also shorten the interval for turbocharged engines, high-mileage engines and cars with a particulate filter — the oil works harder there.

Which oil to choose

Viscosity (for example 5W-30) and approvals (ACEA, API, manufacturer approvals) must match your engine's requirements. Do not pour in whatever is cheapest: the wrong oil speeds up wear and can damage the particulate filter or catalytic converter. We select oil by VIN and car model.

What to replace together with the oil

The oil filter and the drain plug gasket are always replaced together with the oil. The technician will also check the air and cabin filters, coolant and brake fluid levels, belts and suspension — it takes minutes and helps spot problems early.
