Polishing or ceramic coating: the difference and what to choose

2026-10-08 · Prostor

Polishing: removes defects

Polishing removes a very thin layer of clear coat and levels the surface: swirl marks, light scratches, dullness and wash marks disappear. It is a corrective procedure — it restores depth of color and gloss but does not protect the paint from new damage.

Ceramic coating: protects

A ceramic coating forms a hard hydrophobic film on the paint. It boosts gloss, repels water and dirt, makes washing easier and protects against road chemicals, insects and UV. But it does not hide scratches — defects stay under it, so the body is usually polished first.

The right order

First wash and decontamination (removing film and metal particles), then polishing, then degreasing and ceramic application. Coating life depends on the product and care: usually from a year to several years with proper washing.

What to choose

A new car without defects needs only a soft polish and ceramic coating. A car with scratches and dull paint needs correction, then protection. On a tight budget start with polishing and add protection later. A Prostor specialist will assess the paint and suggest an option for your goal.
