Preparing your car for winter: a checklist
Tires
Fit winter tires when the average daily temperature stays around +7 °C or lower. Check tread depth (a safe minimum for winter tires is about 4 mm), tire age and the absence of bulges. Balance the wheels before the season.
Battery and electrics
In the cold a battery loses capacity while the engine needs more cranking current. If the battery is older than 4–5 years or the engine starts worse, have it load-tested along with the alternator charge. It is a quick check that prevents a morning failure.
Fluids
Check the concentration and level of coolant (antifreeze) — it must protect against freezing down to the required temperature. Replace summer washer fluid with winter fluid. Brake fluid absorbs moisture over time, so it is replaced per schedule, usually every 2 years.
Brakes, lights, wipers
Inspect brake pads and discs, check bulbs and headlight aim — it gets dark early in winter. Replace worn wiper blades: in frost the rubber hardens and the glass stays dirty.
