What the price of car maintenance consists of
The manufacturer's schedule
The workload is defined by the service schedule: the list of operations differs at each mileage interval. One service only replaces oil and filters, another adds spark plugs, brake fluid, transmission fluid, a timing belt or chain. So two services of the same car can differ in price several times.
Parts and consumables
Most of the price is oil, filters and consumables. The engine's oil capacity (from 3 to 9 liters or more), the manufacturer's approval and the oil brand noticeably affect the total. Original parts cost more than aftermarket ones, but quality aftermarket parts are normal practice if they meet the manufacturer's requirements.
Labor and vehicle complexity
Labor depends on how involved the job is: on some cars the filter and oil take an hour, on others the undertray, ducts or trim must be removed. Diagnostics, service interval reset and system checks are paid on top.
How not to overpay
Ask for an estimate before work starts and check what is included. Do not skip scheduled maintenance: postponed service usually ends up costing more as unplanned repairs. Choose a shop that shows removed parts, explains recommendations and does not push unnecessary work.
