How to check a used car before buying: 8 steps
1–2. Documents and history
Match the VIN in the documents, on the body and under the windshield, and check the car's history by VIN: mileage, accidents, restrictions. Ask for the service book or maintenance receipts — they show how the car was looked after.
3–4. Body and interior
Inspect the panel gaps and paint shade in daylight and measure paint thickness with a gauge: sharp differences point to repainting after an accident. Check the interior: wear on the steering wheel, pedals and seats should match the stated mileage.
5–6. Diagnostics and fluids
Computer diagnostics shows control unit errors, hidden faults and tampered mileage in some systems. Check the level and color of oil, coolant and brake fluid, and look for leaks under the car and emulsion under the oil filler cap.
7–8. Suspension and test drive
On a lift inspect the suspension, tie rod ends, brakes and underbody. On the test drive listen for noises and check acceleration, gearbox behavior, tracking and braking. A cold engine start is the most revealing.
